Once you have decided to redo the flooring in a room, you have the daunting task of choosing what flooring you want and a pattern you love. Deciding the type of flooring is easy, but what about all those design choices? How do you choose just one?
If you’re looking for a stunning option with an eye-catching pattern, there is only one choice…Herringbone vinyl flooring! Before we get to that, it needs to be mentioned that herringbone is the pattern, and vinyl is the type of material. It’s referred to as herringbone vinyl flooring.
The Herringbone Design
The herringbone design has been around for decades. It was originally a floor pattern that used wooden blocks cut to the size you wanted and laid in a herringbone pattern. Wooden herringbone floors are stunning, however laying and glueing them has always been a delicate and time-consuming job.
The herringbone’s V-shaped design uses lengths of flooring staggered in a side-to-end pattern. The zig-zag pattern resembles the bones of a herring. Some people refer to it as a chevron pattern. Their difference is in the angle of the board’s cut. Herringbone boards are cut at a 90-degree angle, while chevron is cut at a 45-degree angle. Vinyl herringbone flooring is much easier to lay and the reason why it has become so popular.
Herringbone vinyl flooring looks impressive in any room. It makes a small room look larger and makes a large space look spectacular. The herringbone design widens a narrow room because it pulls your vision to the room’s farthest part. You can even use herringbone as the focal point in a large room and frame it with a plain flooring edge.
Herringbone vinyl flooring complements any style room. Use it in a farm-style kitchen or more contemporary living space. The size of the flooring planks and tile gives the design depth and can be bigger or smaller to fit the size of the room.
Choosing the Vinyl for the Herringbone Floor
Luxury vinyl flooring offers three options, vinyl sheets, Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT), and Luxury Vinyl Planks. Vinyl flooring withstands moisture, endures lots of foot traffic, and can last for 20 to 30 years if you maintain it properly. Vinyl flooring is one one the most affordable flooring choices available. When you pair vinyl flooring with the herringbone pattern, you create a beautiful, durable floor that will last a very long time.
Types of Vinyl Flooring
Luxury vinyl planks, tiles, and vinyl sheets have some things in common. They are all water-resistant, have a shiny topcoat, are stain-resistant, and withstand high footfall, water, and dirt.
However, some vinyl planks and tiles come without backing. In this case, you need to put down an underlay before installing the floor. The underlay acts as a moisture barrier, sound dampener, and insulator. The underlay ensures the vinyl flooring is smooth and flat. All three consist of four layers:
- Wear layer (topcoat)
- Print layer (design layer)
- Water-resistant layer
- Backing
Luxury Vinyl Tile
You can lay luxury vinyl tiles on a new or existing floor. There is no grouting involved. It can mimic the appearance of porcelain, ceramic, and stone. The thickness of these tiles makes them durable and the designs very realistic due to the texture in the design layer. They are more slip-resistant than their natural counterparts.
Installation is done professionally, but they are so easy to install that you can do it yourself in a few hours. For example, a herringbone vinyl floor can be glued down or laid using a click and lock tile.
Luxury Vinyl Planks
Luxury vinyl planks have a textured, realistic wood feel. These vinyl planks are made using PVC topped with a design layer and a topcoat. The thickness of the wear layer ensures the plank’s durability and increases its longevity. The planks are long and come in several widths.
Luxury vinyl tiles and planks are both waterproof, but vinyl planks can withstand water. They are available in a click and lock or glued down option. Using luxury vinyl planks for your herringbone floor will give any room character.
Sheet Vinyl
Sheet vinyl has improved 100% since it first came out decades ago. Sheet vinyl needs a stable subfloor to lay flat and look smooth. Despite being water-resistant, it is not waterproof, requiring an underlay as a moisture barrier. The added advantage to an underlay is the noise absorption and insulation it adds to the flooring. Be sure to use the underlay the flooring manufacturer recommends to keep your warranty in good standing.
The herringbone design is in the print layer of sheet vinyl flooring with the texture mimicking stone and wood. It is just as durable and resistant to stains. Unfortunately, it is softer than vinyl planks, and tiles and therefore scratches easier.
Sheet vinyl comes in huge sheets, which are cut and tailored to a particular room size. They weld the seams so the flooring is seamless. Of course, you’ll want a professional to install the flooring so the herringbone pattern is correct and appropriately seamed. Vinyl herringbone flooring is quite affordable so installing does usually fit the budget.
Herringbone for Any Room
Herringbone flooring comes in various colours, textures, and styles, allowing you to personalize the floor to the room’s colour scheme. Use your herringbone floor to make a bold statement or enhance the look of a newly-decorated room. Who says you can’t have the flooring of your dreams!
